On September 7, 1928, the Kennedy mine was to become once again the victim of fire. This time entirely on its own property a disastrous blaze destroyed all of the surface plant except for the mill and main office building. The plant was rebuilt in 1929.
In 1939 E.C. Hutchinson, who had been president of the Kennedy Mining and Milling Company for many years, was succeeded in that office by Joseph R. Knowland, publisher of the Oakland Tribune. The mine was closed in November 1942 in compliance with the U. S. Government's wartime.
