Mahoney Mine, Sutter Creek, Amador County

Founded by Jerry Mahoney from Killarney, Ireland in 1851. The Mahoney Mine Claim purchased from Alvinza Hayward. Merged with the Wildman Mine and reached a depth of 1200 feet. Produced $5 million in gold. Later part of Lincoln Consolidated Co.

Marker is located at the north end of the parking lot on Gopher Hill Road next to the Wildman Mine Powder House. Marker is in this post office area of Sutter Creek.

The Mahoney Mine, active in the 1870's and 1880's, was purchased by the Wildman Company in 1894 and operated with the Wildman until 1906.

Excerpt from Amador Ledger - Feb 22, 1901

Noticing that the gouge contained small masses of good ore, from 20 to 400 pounds in weight, Superintendent Ross cross-cut into the foot-wall and found good ore in the opposite side.

Excerpt from Amador Ledger - Feb 22, 1901

The Wildman is 1300 feet deep, the Mahoney 1000. The 1000 foot level of the Mahoney is equivalent to the 800-foot level of the Wildman. The ore-bodies of these mines, both great and small, to be routined to a definite zone between, two reefs of Mariposa clay elates, although these latter appear not to be directly associated with the ore-bodies themselves.
