  • The Hubbell Building, Sutter Creek, California

    William Hubbell came to California in 1849 to try his luck at mining which after failed attempts at mining he settled down with his family in Sutter Creek and established the Summit House Hotel in 1855.

    The building standing today was built in 1867. He operated a General Store. Mr. Hubbell was also the Justice of the Peace for many years. He died in 1894 and his wife in 1908.


    The store part of the building was sold to Jacob Futter in 1886 which Mr. Futter ran a clothing store.

    Excerpt Ledger Dispatch Sept 30, 1904
    Mrs. Rebecca Futter of Sutter Creek died in San Francisco on Wednesday, September 21, after a short illness. She went to the city about a month ago for a change. She was then in usual good health. In a few days she took a cold, which settled in her lungs and developed into a fatal illness. The interment took place at the Jewish cemetery of San Francisco. Deceased leaves one son, S. Futter, who is now left in full charge of the Sutter Creek dry goods store. Also two married daughters, Mrs. Higgins of Jamestown, and Mrs. Simon of Oakland.
