Ferrero Family

One of the older Shenandoah Valley farms and homes is this, now John Ferrero home. Peter Jaciento Ferrero was born in 1884 to a family of shoemakers, Peter's life was to ultimately lead back to the heritage of his native soil, growing grapes. At the age of 16 Peter migrated to the mines of Arizona. How long he stayed there is not known. What is known is that he was in San Francisco in 1906. The earthquake of that year was all he needed to start moving again, this time to Amador and the Fremont Mine outside Drytown. Its unquestionable that peter spent time at the Dal Porto boarding house because in 1910 he married their oldest daughter, Clorinda. In 1910, the Dal Portos moved to their ranch in Shenandoah Valley. The Ferreros moved with them.

Sometime between 1910 and 1012, the Ferreros bought the ranch on Shenandoah Road. Edith Ferrero Silva was born on September 19, 1912. In 1917, October 18, John Alessio was born.

Six acres of Zinfandels were planted over the next eight years: two acres in 1920, two in 1023, and two in 1925. All the vines are close around the house and all are still producing.

John served in the Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945. After the war he worked for P.G.& E. until 1950.

"When I came back to the ranch in 1950, I started planting Zinfandels and by 1952 most of the new vineyards were in. It wasn't because I knew then that the market would grow the way it has, I can't say why, but I just kept planting vines." Peter Ferrero passed away in 1954. Clorinda lived a full life for thirty more years until 1984.
