George M. L. Matthis

George M. L. Matthis born in Kentucky in 1827. He arrived in the Drytown area by 1850 when still part of Calaveras. He returned to Illinois long enough to marry Mary Lawrence and then returned back to Drytown. Mary sailed around the horn in 1856 joining him in drytown where all the children were born including my May Matthis White. George owned one of the 40 saloons/hotel/store in Drytown. Not sure when but it burned down along with his house, sometime after 1866. George then purchased another hotel in the vicinty of Central House and died in 1895. He, his wife Mary and 2 of their children are buried in the drytown cemetary.
