This photograph, with the multitude of children, governesses, and perhaps the master and mistress of the lace shown, was taken in the 1870s by Mrs. E. W. Withington of lone.
A group of her stereopticon prints were preserved and now are in the Huntington library in San Marino. The one Logan shows was titled, "The Grant house."
That is, it was headquarters and home for the manager of the Arroyo Seco grant. He was Frank Frates in 1876. Did he have such a brood? Mrs. Withington died in 1877 so the picture dates before that.
